Edward B. Beharry & Co Ltd, established in 1937, began as a small importer, wholesaler, and retailer of food products and has grown into a diverse conglomerate encompassing manufacturing, marketing, financial services, vehicle dealership, and fast food. Co-founder Edward B. Beharry took a bold step in 1959 by venturing into manufacturing with Champion™ Baking Powder, followed by a range of successful products like Indi™ Special Madras Curry Powder and Chico™ Bubble Gum. The 1990s saw further diversification into noodles and pasta with Champion™ products, and from 1997 to 2007, the company invested over USD27.5M in major retooling and expansion efforts. Achieving ISO 9001 certification in 2005, the company now leads many local markets and has a significant presence in the Caribbean, North America, the UK, and South America. Financial ventures began in 1989 with Secure International Finance Co. Inc., and expanded to include North American Life Insurance Co. Ltd., North American Fire, Motor & General Insurance Co. Ltd., and Guyana’s first Merchant Bank. In automotive, Beharry Automotive Ltd was established in 1994 as the exclusive distributor of Toyota in Guyana. The company also acquired Sterling Products Ltd., turning it into a successful public company, and recently ventured into fast food with the acquisition of the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise, marking another exciting chapter for this thriving conglomerate.
